Making a muslin pattern for spats

Mamapajama informed me that people make a whole piece of clothing out of muslin before they make it out of the actual fabric to make sure it fits right and stuff.  “MADNESS”, I said..

However, I decided to do just that in order to make some steampunk inspired spats for Whump. I’ve never amde ones for mens shoes before and for this pair I am doing a rounded toe instead of a split toe like I usually do.

The final product will be made out of black and white houndstooth in a cotton duck fabric and I’ll work in some PVC from my old black vinyl ball gown.

I’m not sure about what to use for a closure. a zipper might actually be cool and would certainly be swankier than my usual quick fix snap closures.

I thank you for letting me share this pattern. I have not made any yet from it, but when I do I will let you know how they turned out.

    Thanks

  2. i highly recommend doing muslins – i didn’t bother for years, then was obliged to at my college course.

and hey presto – you get your frustration-related bald spots first time round and it takes AGES, but then when you’re working with the fabric that makes your heart beat (that probably inspired you to start the project in the first place) you breeze through it and it feels g o o d. take notes as you go along to remind your future self how you solved problems. you’ll like yourself for it.
