This weekend I went with Badger to see the AXIS Dance Company performance here in Oakland. It was awesome and if you’re in town you should go check it out. I don’t see many dance performances but whenever I do am I just astounded by what people can do with their bodies. I loved the cello and violin and spoken word that was integrated into the performances as well.
I realized early on in the performance that anytime a dancer touched or used the the chair of another dancer I was getting squicky inside. I had to talk myself down. I’m a strong believer in personal space, I had to quit going to aikido classes because I couldn’t deal with all the touching involved. But it was a bit different because I think I see touching a persons wheelchair as an extra sign of disrespect in general but duh, these are DANCERS doing a dance together. Once I got over myself I thought that some of the parts where one person was balanced on another person and their wheelchair were some of the most beautiful and the most badass.
The next thing I did was go visit my friend G on the set of her shoot for a movie trailer that she wrote and is directing. I’ve never been on a set before so it was new and exciting. I’m amazed by what you can do with just be power of having an idea and organizing it. This was like a $0 budget shoot and it looked great.

I brought cupcakes and then sat around watching them do take after take of the same scene from various angles. Then my nose started getting stuffy so I left.
Today I went and took 2 classes at the new Kinetic Arts Center over on 7th. I took a flexibility class and a “cirq it” class (circuit training circus style). I think I am more flexible than I think I am. What I want is to be able to do a full on back bend. When I was a kid, young and supple and taking gymnastics classes I swore I would never become old and unable to do a backbend. And yet here we are… totally unable to do a backbend. Not even able to DREAM of a backbend any time soon. I don’t think this class was quite geared towards that goal. But it was great and I learned some excellent foot stretches and some good neck and back ones. Pam, the teacher was super nice and good at explaining what she wanted me to do.
Then I took the circus class.. and boy, did I suck seriously or what? Yes, I sucked. I only did the circuit twice and just about died and was dripping with sweat. You want me to hang from this bar and get my feet where how? huh? no WAY! Also, he wanted me to climb a rope. ahahahaha. I rocked the hula hooping portion AND the juggling. Who knew I would be able to juggle?!
