Our house is filled with contractors this week. It sort of ruins vacation time. Originally I was planning on taking Jack out of the house completely for fear of lead paint dust but I ditched that idea as it just seemed too hard and there is actually no lead paint up in the attic where all the work is happening anyway and they are vacuuming up all the wood dust as they work.
Yesterday, after telling my sister that I have never had bronchitis, it later occurred to me that I must have bronchitis RIGHT NOW. Here I am with a weird reoccurring sinus infection and cough that appears only at night and in the morning and I feel sort of limp and unable to do more than sit around thinking about all things I could be doing. I could have gone on FOREVER not realizing what was wrong with me. SMRT.
Tuesday we did jaunt out to buy a chicken coop. We were going to make one but it’s cold and rainy and aforementioned work people are using our garage right now. It’s a small but cute house with a tiny run. We can easily build it a stand and make a bigger run with some chicken wire and I think it would be easy to make the nest box bigger. First thing is to board up all the holes in the fences. I don’t want chickens running amok in the post office or apartment next door parking lot.
Our jaunt out took us over near Golden Gate park and so, asshats that we are, we decided to go to the Academy of Sciences. It was crowded and we were hungry and jack was a leeetle bit whiny. It was fine. Jack ate a cookie and we looked at the white alligator and then he played in the kids area which, by some miracle, was not full. He loooves it in there and Vim and I have iPhones so we can hunker down in a corner and read email or a book. Thank you thank thank you smart phones.
Wednesday we went and bought some chickens plus feed, a watering thing, corn stuff for bedding. We got a buff orpington, a rhode island red and an ameriucana all about 2 months old.
NOW WHAT?! The hen house feels small suddenly. Do they need water and food at night while closed in hen house? what if they are not getting on their roosting pole? should i put them up there?
I put their waterer in the hen house last night. Do
I need to move it outside in the day? what should be in their nest box? do they want hay or something? Their outside run is not very big at all. I want to let them out but am suddenly nervous about it.
I need a backyard chicken mentor.
