In which Jack identifies a plant, plays a video game, makes a drawing, tells a story and throws a tantrum (or three)

Be still my heart! Jack and I were walking down the street and he said, “Sourgrass!”, picked some and started eating it. I know that in the garden at his daycare they pick it and taste it. It was super cute and I suddenly felt guilty that I haven’t been doing more nature walks and identifying stuff with him. We do birds more often as I’m better at that. Really, it’s that sometimes his abilities outstrip what I imagine he can do.

Tim introduced Jack to online video games. Jack can’t really manipulate a mouse yet, especially not the new perfectly smooth, sleek Apple ones. It would probably help if we had a mouse that had some tactile cues as to what to push. Speaking of tactile and visual cues.. the camera we got Jack for christmas is sort of absurd as it has about 12 buttons. I can barely figure out how to use it. the largest button says ‘OK’ on it and is neither the ON button nor the ‘take a picture’ button, wtf does it do?!

Jack’s drawings all of a sudden in the past few days have changed. Instead of random seeming scribbles they are a little more defined and he tells a story about what he is drawing. The one above was about a fish a shark and a big fishing pole wiuth a guy in a boat – click on it to go to flickr to see my notes. then the guy in the boat kept falling off and his friend had to climb up and save him.

Jack told me a story in the car this week, He reached way up and caught a bat and he held it in his hand and gets to keep it. he feeds it strawberries and pets it and it is soft. Then he caught me one and handed it to me. He held it in his hand until we got home and showed it to Vim.

Since returning from Texas Jack has had three tantrums!! They were very awful for both of us. All three times it ended up requiring that I pick him up while he was thrashing around screaming and forcibly carrying him to the car and stuffing him in his car seat. Two of them were when he was a bit over tired, probably hungry and frustrated because he “wanted to do it myself!” but then i couldn’t figure out what it was he wanted to do and after a few minutes I no longer cared. The first one was the day after we got back from Texas and I was picking him up from daycare and he didn’t want to leave. Poor little bit was probably confused with all that traveling. Anyway, I certainly did not behave perfectly well during these tantrums myself but I am learning to cope.
