Dirt Can Make You Happy

I’ve been mucking about with dirt this semester. I did a bunch of tests on a patch of dirt on the backyard and for all internets and porpoises it is totally dead dirt. no nutrients, minerals or anything that a plant might need in order to grow. This is what happens to your dirt when you have a lawn for years and years and years.

I dug up a big patch of it (over and over) to make an herb spiral. I ended up amending it with about 20% walt witman compost from American Soil with various layers of kitchen waste in there as well. I also layered in a bunch of dead plum tree trunks and branches in the spirit of hugelkultur (Hugelkultur is nothing more than making raised beds filled with rotten wood. ).

Here it is before the dirt has been put back on.
herb spiral to be.

Vim put some plants in the herb spiral yesterday and covered them with ugly green netting to keep the chickens off.

This morning I ripped up more the ugly black plastic that covers much of the yard about 2 inches under the “top soil”. I’m about to plant some jumbo sunflowers!

Jack and I have been eating lots of salads with lettuce and spinach from the backyard! So satisfying! and delicious!

Did anyone else out there read the various articles about bacteria in dirt helping depression? Seems there is a bacteria called Mycobacterium vaccae that can trigger seratonin release. I’m ready to run outside to lick some dirt, who’s with me?

  • You should be so proud of yourself for teaching your child such healthy eating habits. My kids would punch me in the face for that particular salad.
