Tomato harvest fun

We did not miss the tomato harvest in our backyard and I am so happy about that! I have picked many many bowls full of cherry tomatoes, the funky shaped heirlooms are just ripening and the regular I can’t remember what kind of tomatoes are juuust getting ready to ripen.

So far I have made and canned a tomato confit and a lovely tomato conserve. Vim has made a lacto-fermented ketchup and plans on doing a few jars of pickled tomatoes, a relish and maybe a chutney as well. I froze a few large freezer bags full and cooked up a tomato gratin that Stitch and Boots sent to me. I recommend it as it was quite tasty.

I picked up a flat of dry farmed early girl tomatoes at the farmers market today and will can those tomorrow. I wish I had gotten two flats so maybe I will go get more next week.

We harvested all our zucchinis, carrots and green onions so that we could make way for some winter crops. Mostly I really need to get my lettuce and kale going again.

I’m going to try garlic, onions, shallots, brussel sprouts and cabbage this winter.

Of all things grown in the garden, tomatoes are by far my favourite… When I have a garden, I may only plant tomatoes and whatever companion plants help them grow. Dozens of kinds…

Looks like a great haul – and the preserves! Good luck with the rest of your canning.

  • I’d love that ketchup recipe! We make ours with vinegar, but doing it with fermentation would be such a great thing! I want to try the kvass as well — I’ve never tried it — can you even describe what it tastes like?

Now I’m trying to figure out how many tomato plants I’ll need next year in order to have enough to can a year’s worth of tomato stuff (how’s that for technical?) from my own garden. I think it may be a lot.

You have done so well with your garden and canning this year!! I’m impressed with the variety of things you’ve done with the tomatoes. I don’t venture out too much. I do canned diced toms, canned sauce, and some slow roasted. That’s pretty much it. Well, last year I actually did some enchilada sauce. I’m still not hundred percent in love with the one I make though.

Sidenote: Angela’s ketchup is really good.

    Pickled tomatoes. That sounds intriguing.
