I have no idea why this is out of print. It is in The Tall Book of Make-Believe published in 1950. Jack LOOOVES Bad Mousie.

This book also has a bunch of other awesome stories. The Very Mischief by Lesley Frost. Susan’s Bears by Mildred Lawrence and the Pear Tree by E. Elizabeth Longwell. ther is a list on this page.

________________________________________

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Donnica who lived with her mother and a little black mouse. Mousie was very bad because no one had taught him to be good.

He cut big holes in the bedspread with Donnica’s little scissors.
He threw all of Donnica’s clean socks into the bathtub when it had water in it.
He made little mud tracks all over the rug when he came in.
Donnica’s mother said, “Mousie, don’t you know that nobody loves a bad mouse? That’s why we don’t want you to stay here with us anymore.” And she took her broom and swept him out of the house. “Now, don’t you come back until you learn to be a good ouse,” she called after him. Then she closed the door and locked it.
But bad Mousie waited until dark. Then he crawled under the gate and crept through a crack in the wall. And next morning, there he was again!
Donnica was glad to see him, but Mousie was still bad.
He pulled the top off the powder can and spilled powder all over the rug.
He tangled Donnica’s hair and scattered her ribbons on the floor.
He tipped over things not he breakfast table and spilled cocoa, and orange juice, and lots and lots of milk.
This made Donnica’s mother very angry. “Bad Mousie,” she said, “I’m going to put you in a box and close it tight and throw it in my washtub full fo water.” And she did.

But the box was only glued together, and the water softened the glue and the box fell apart. So, Mousie swam up to the top and scrambled out. Then he shook the water out of his ears and he climbed the cellar stairs and squeezed under the door. And there he was again! And Donnica was glad to see him.
The next day Mousie was as bad as ever.
He pulled all the books out of the shelves and tore out some of the pages.
He unrolled yards and yards of paper in the bathroom.
He spilled green ink all over the inside of a desk drawer.
Now Donnica’s mother was very, very angry. She said, “Mousie, you are so very bad that I shall feed you to the night owl!” o she took him and tied him with three white strings to the fence in the back yard. Then she put a yellow ribbon around his neck, so that the owl could see him better in the dark and fly down and gobble him up.
But before the stars came out, the mouse wriggled and tugged and finally got his feet loose. Then he untangled his tail, and nibbled through the strings around his tummy. So he was free again, and he ran and hid all night. The owl couldn’t find him.
Next morning he came back to the house and climbed in at an open window. And there he was again! And Donnica was glad to see him.
But Mousie was still bad!
The next time Donnica’s mother was away at the store, he took purple crayon and scribbled all over the yellow wallpaper.
Then he dumped all the buttons out of the button box.
He found a bottle of shoe polish, and he painted the floor white.
When Donnica’s mother came home and found the awful mess he had made, she grabbed him by his little string tail. Then she pressed her lips together hard, and she thought and thought of a way to get rid of him. At last she decided to let the wind blow him away.

So she got her oldest umbrella and fastened Mousie to the handle with an old belt. Then she carried him up to the roof and opened the umbrella, so that the wind could blow him off, right into the sky. The little mouse kicked and squeaked, but it did him no good, for soon the umbrella was sailing up, up over the tree tops. And Mousie was fastened to it.
After a while the umbrella drifted gently down onto a little ink cloud. Mousie managed to get himself unbuckled, and he let the big umbrella blow away. Then he lay down on the soft, warm cloud to rest. He was really very lonely and wished that he could go home to Donnica and her mother and live there with them. “Maybe I could leaner to be good,” he thought.
All of a sudden it began to get cold and th cloud began to drip. Drip, drip; drop, drop; dripple, droplet; the cloud was changing into rain. Mousie was getting wetter and wetter. Soon there was no cloud to lie on, and down he tumbled with the raindrops. Down, down, until he splashed into a muddy puddle.
Mousie was cold and wet and very unhappy. He had to swim and wade to get out of the big puddle. Then he ran as fast as he could to Donnica’s house. But before he crept under the door, guess what he did! He wiped his muddy little feet on the doormat.
And when Donnica looked around, there he was again! “Donnica,” said the mouse, “could you teach me to be a good mouse? I want to stay here with you where it is warm and cozy and I can be your friend.”
“I’ll try to teach you,” said Donnica.
“And I’ll try to be good, ” said the mouse.
So Donnica taught him how to begin to be good.
She showed him what not to touch.
She told him to cutpaper dolls, instead of bedspreads, with her little scissors.

She taught him how to wipe up the milk he spilled.
She helped him pick up books and put buttons away in there boxes.
Then she kissed him to help him get good faster.
When Donnica’s mother came home from the store, she certainly was surprised, for there was Mousie helping Donnica set the table for lunch.
“Mommie, I’m teaching him to be a good mouse,” said Donnica, “and Mousie is trying very, very hard. Please let him stay.”
So Donnica’s mother was proud of them both, and she told Mousie that she, too, would help him learn to be good. Then she hugged Donnica and the mouse, and they all join hands and danced round and round.
Next day Mousie brought in the morning newspaper and the mail.
He wiped all the forks and spoons, and put away the pans after breakfast.
And he spread the wet tea-towels out on the grass too bleach in the sun.
So Mousie became a good mouse, and they all lived cozily together again.

Man, Halloween this year was a whole week of festivities. Last week Jack and I carved pumpkins:

We grew those cute little white pumpkins ourselves! I like the white with the contrast of the orange insides.

Then I made Jack’s costume:

I was a little nervous about it since he was being sort of bossy and demanding about what it should look like. I had to explain that I would do the best I could and that if he complained my head would explode and he would have to clean it up.

I might draw up a little tutorial as making this alligator tail was pretty easy and came out so cute on him:

We did the Piedmont Ave Halloween parade and trick or treating event on Saturday:

Then on to the haunted hallway at the elementary school, then to the free hot dogs and bouncy houses at the cemetery. I love this neighborhood.

Sunday was a Halloween birthday party at which they beat the crap out of a unicorn, chased a ghost, made magic wands and ate cake.

Monday at preschool they went to the pumpkin patch wearing their new screen printed shirts and they bobbed for apples. heh. When I picked jack up after school one of the other kids said she was going trick or treating. Last year we did not do that on halloween night so i sent out a hurried e-mail to my neighborhood toddlers mailing list about when and where to do it. We went out at about 6:30. jack refused to wear his crocigator outfit and instead wore a ninja sword and a mask he made at school.

It was pretty cute watching him trick or treat. He rang doorbells, said trick or treat loudly and said thank you after getting candy. It was fun to watch and fun to see the people who live around here and all the other kids in costumes.

What in the heck do we do with all this candy? I ate a few baby snickers and a butterfingers. It’s all too sweet for me now. Jack likes the sour candies and the lollipops.

Jack sorted his candy and crouched over it like a dragon on a pile of gold

I am so mad and i have had it up to HERE with these fucking thoughtless bitches. i swear to god if one more bitch says that to my little kid i will rip her fucking head off.

Here’s how it goes:
disgusting grown up bitch gets in my sons face and says, “HI HOW ARE YOU?!?!?” or some shit (news flash bitch, you are gross and fucking uninteresting to me and my 4 yr old so FUCK OFF)

OR

some kid with a stupid disgusting grown up bitch says something to my kid.

Second act. Jack doesn’t say anything. Why? i don’t know. He fucking doesn’t want to. What’s it to you?

Oh? you say it’s amateur psych101-bully-ignorant fuck-extroverts only-sterotyper night? Well duh. That’s why this happens:

stupid grown up bitch says, “OH! HE’s SSSHHHYYYYYYYY.”

How about you fuck off? Why why why do people think this is an okay thing to say? WHY?

next time here’s what I’ll do:

I’ll bend down and in my most heinous grown up smarm voice i’ll say, “jack, sometimes grown ups are very rude. it’s okay to ignore them and walk away.”

OR

I could look said bitch straight in they eye and say,
“wow. that was rude”
OR
“he isn’t shy, he’s deaf. so mind your own business and quit assuming shit about people”
OR
“don’t make assumptions about my child’s personality out loud in front of him or else I’ll have to make the assumption that you are horribly rude AND don’t think before you speak AND don’t consider kids people worth a little dignity and privacy… BITCH”

I have already started buying christmas presents. I am unsure if this is good or bad. One, it spreads around the money so maybe you get a couple of higher bills instead of one huge one. This doesn’t help us any since we pay off our credit card completely every month so it is a bogus excuse and really it probably means I end up spending even more money. But I like buying shit for people and I like making shit for people and the sooner I do it the less stress there will be around it. Plus, I like to have a big mass of presents to sort through and gloat over.

Jack does not need any more toys and in fact I still have stuff left over from last christmas that I didn’t give him thinking I would bust them out so time when he was bored or I needed to give him a treat. That never happened somehow. He does want every Lego set ever made and routinely brings me the catalog so that he can discuss it with me. We already have too many legos… what to do?

Did I tell you that a few months ago Vim went to a church garage sale and bought a HUGE bin of legos for 100$. It is like thousands of dollars of legos in there. Mostly sets from the mid 90′s and include a lot of the Atlantis series. Did you know that you can look on a lego brick for a number and then online you can look up what set that brick is from? Well, you can. and then you can download the instructions to build. vim and Jack have been doing that nonstop for many months now.

Hi, my name is Minnie and I have a kid obsessed with Lego.

In other news, Jack has been moving back into a charming stage rather than a freak out and be horrible stage. Although it still seems to me that he cries an awful lot for a 4 year old. I was greatly comforted by googling “4.5 yr old tantrum” and rereading Louisa Ames Bates “Your 4 Year Old – Wild and Wonderful”.

I have noticed him lately making an active effort to say how he feels instead of freaking out. Although, what to do when your 4 yr old says, “it’s making me really mad right now that you want me to hurry up and put my shoes on so that we can go to the grocery store”?

I’ll leave you with this harbinger of future Lego insanity:

UPDATE: i spoke too soon. Mr Pants was heinous not he walk home from school and had a tantrum and i had to carry him thrashing and crying 2 blocks home.

I harvested about 10 baskets of cherry tomatoes this morning.

My goals for the day:
- UNPACK and do laundry
- slow roast some cherry tomatoes
- catch up on email

Just cooked glazed butternut squash and brussels sprouts and it was SUPER tasty and good!

Jack is off to school today. Thank god! Vim and I both really really needed a day off and he was happy and excited to be back.

I am still working on my above list from yesterday… and also I am doing some serious loafing on the internet and now I am watching the Disney version of A Wrinkle in Time. So far, it’s not too bad!

My list of things to do is ginormous and all in my head. As soon as I start to try to write everything down it all disappears from my head. Oy.

Well, Jack is four years old now.

We built him a cardboard castle with cardboard box rivets from Mr. McGroovy. We were not anal about building it and it took us like 2 hours with more futzing by Vim on the day of. It rained really hard the night we were building it so we pre assembled it in the living room. I didn’t try very hard to find huge refrigerator or appliance boxes since the two places we tried told us that appliances come bubble wrapped now. Instead we just bought some large moving boxes and were done with it. By the end of it we stopped even turning the boxes inside out. 4 year olds don’t care!

His party went well, his favorite part of the party was the presents and his favorite present was the painted brick his friend J gave him. There was enough food, enough cupcakes and enough stuff for people to do. I do wish that I could remember Jack’s friend’s parent’s names, though. I get very stressed about that. i Look at someoneand i think what their name might be but even if I KNOW it I sometimes the last second worry i have it wrong.

I made little goodie bags and Jack helped me make heart shaped crayons to put in them.

We sang him happy birthday and he had a moment of social narcolepsy so I had to blow out his candles for him.

He has been super sweet and biddable (sort of) lately. He love star wars and legos.

Long ago I instituted the morning, afternoon and nighttime snuggle events, MANSE ™, so that I can be guaranteed at least 3-6 snuggles a day since if I get a snuggle from him there must then be another snuggle from me to him, so they come in twos. Anyway, I love that he comes in here in the morning and says “it’s time for your morning time SNUGGLE” in a little sing-song kind of voice. He also uses it to when he thinks i might be mad about something he has just done. “oh mom, we forgot your afternoon snuggle yesterday” and so he successfully diverts my attention.

I like how, the minute my voice gets that hard mad frustrated edge to it he says, “mom why are frustrated. why are you using that voice?”. That makes me stop and explain to him what I am feeling and i don’t know, maybe that makes other peoples emotions less freakish and scary. He can fairly accurately identify what other people might be feeling and call them out, get an explanation and it’s okay. That’s what I imagine anyway. We recently discussed how even if we are mad or frustrated with each other we still love each other and thusly the after mad snuggle AMS(tim) was born.

I’m looking forward to the rest of age 4. He still likes his scenario games. Right now his favorite one is to play Sweetie the Cat. He get in his imaginary cage and I have to go to the pet store to buy a cat. I pick him out and read on the cage that his name is sweetie. I pay for him (2 dollars) and we go home to meet other cats and get cat food.

I wonder what he will look back and and remember.

Holy shit, y’all. Why did I cave and say I would have a big party for Jack? I caved because I knew Jack was enjoy it but I now know that my imaginings of how much I would NOT enjoy it are all totally truer than shit.

Some things to remember:

First off, even the cheapest possible party is not cheap at all.

Preschool parties mean preschoolers, their younger siblings and one or two parents for each kid.
You have to feed all of those people snacks and cupcakes and most likely actual lunch too. I’m planning on chips and salsa, some veggies and fruit and hotdogs, sausages and some veggie dogs. plus, 45 million cupcakes.

I wish I had said NO PRESENTS. Does jack need 15 more presents?! Absolutely not. Please god let people just get him something super tiny. like one lego. or maybe just a drawing of a lego.

Party favors. party favors are fun. kids love them and so do adults. I don’t want to be a huge party pooper so I have made very cute little cloth bags that snap closed and have a tiny carabiner attached so that they can hang them from a belt loop. I will put some sidewalk chalk and some stickers in each one. I admit I also have the urge to make some cutely chapped crayons out of old crayons and a candy mold but do I really need to create one more project for myself?

Party activity – 15 preschoolers need to be entertained for between 1 to 3 hours.
my plan is to use cardboard box rivets to create a cardboard box house/structure in the backyard and let the kids run around in it and paint it. Unfortunately the weather forecast is now forecasting rain. fuckity! If it rains we will have to build something inside and use markers instead of paint. That means I have to run out and buy markers… or i could go ahead and make crayons and we could use those.

When i first sent out the invite no one could come. It was for mothers day weekend and i sent it out only 2 weeks in advance. Jack’s particular favorite friends would not be able to come and that sucked so I changed it. But that was stressful and i’m embarrassed to say that i cried when people responded no on the evite. Clearly I am not cut out for party planning.

Next year i will stick to the idea of 1 or 2 kids and figuring out some special outing to do.

Also, I will print out some of these star wars masks just for the hell of it and kids can wear them.

My baby is 4!

Man! Jack is hard to parent right now. Also, he is delightful.

For our last game of the evening he declared that he was a pikachu pokemon that could go in space and that his tail had the power to turn Pluto back into a planet so that it wouldn’t be sad anymore and could hang out with it’s other planet friends. All of this accompanied by him wiggling his ass and making a lighting sound while jumping on the bed naked.

He also spent the day offering me ‘Power Wine”(TM). Apparently this elixir makes my blood as powerful as his and makes it so that we can fly really fast together. Nice.

I’m a grumpy asshole right now. Alternating between severe depression with total loss of affect and wild passionate anger at everything in sight. I’m blaming it on the steroids but always there is the niggling possibility that I am just an asshole.

I’m not sure how to describe what is so hard about Jack right now. I think it is just that everything must be JUST SO. And I just don’t have the patience right now to manage this in a kind but firm manner.

Jack and I have been watching The Lord of the Rings movies. We are on the second disk of The Two Towers. I try to fast forward through the parts I think must be scary and he says, “mo0o0om, I’m not scared of this part!” and if I keep fast forwarding he cries. Finally I had to explain that some parts simply HAD to be fast forwarded through and if he objected then we would have to stop watching it. So I am assuaging my parenting guilt by FF through some of the spittley battle scenes.

We played several games this morning. First we played Alien (dad) is attacking us and we must build a red tailed hawk attack robot. The later, in his room, he built a sword and a gun out of tinker toys and then said we each had a ring of power and must now fight and go to Mount Doom. Then, on the way to school he had part of his tinker toy sword that had turned into a magic key and we had to go through a series of magic gates to get to school.

All of those games were pretty good. Watching him be a red tailed hawk robot is hilarious and I liked how he built the things out of tinker toys and how the sword later turned into a magic key.

I’m still feeling a little guilty about watching the ring movies with him and that is why I am confessing it on the internets.

I read the book “Killing Monsters, why children need fantasy, super heros, and make-believe violence” and it made me rethink my stance on play violence yet again. I admit that I over reacted when two yr old Jack killed me with a gun. I’m sure many people reading my original post about it rolled their eyes at me. What can I say? I’m a chronic (and slow) overthinker.

As far as I’m concerned now Jack can toss me into the fiery chasm from whence I came and shoot a ring of power at me all he wants. NOW, the thing that makes me sad is that he tried to set up a game in which he was rescuing a princess. .That can not stand. I told him i was a princess with a sword and would rescue HIM from the huge squid that was about to grab him.

I still change the genders of the characters in kids books when I read to him. Speaking of books, Jack has been doing a lot of reading on his own lately. I worked out in the yard for like 2 hours the other day and came back in a few times to check on him and he sat up in his room the whole time looking at books. In preschool right now they are talking about one letter a week. Last week was A and he came home and said, “mom! there’s a letter A in my name!”. so cute!

Yesterday Jack and I went to the new Target store in West Oakland. The Target sign is huge and tall and you can see it from far away… so yeah. Everybody loves Target, right?

Mr. Pants: Mama? do you want to play a little game?
Me: erm… okay.
Mr. Pants: Okay, first, the aliens are landing and they have a sign that says “MEAN ALIENS”. Then we have to build a cat shaped robot and put a real cat in it and it will meow and scare away the aliens.
Me: okay. *pretends to hammer a robot together*
Mr. Pants: *dives under the covers and starts meowing*
Me: OMG! Here they come?!?! what will we DOOOOOO??!
Mr. Pants: *meows louder*
Me: ohhhh, that scared them away. I see them flying off in their spaceship!
Mr. Pants: *emerges* YAY!!!!! *throws stuffed animal canons after them*

REPEAT 1,000 TIMES

And that was one of the more interesting ones… All he wants to do is play various games such as this one.

Whatever happened to playing quietly in a corner with your Legos? Do all kids do this? It’s not that the scenario/game thing is so weird it’s just that it is his main source of play.

This morning with hands on hips Jack looked around at his messy breakfast area and said, “what is all this shit?”.

Nice! I win!

Yesterday Jack had his first dentist appointment. Last week I had a dentist app and started to talk it up to Jack and I made him an appointment to see my dentist. It’s fun to go to the dentist! Wheeeee! Day of I suddenly got worried that this would be the moment he learned to hate me as he realized I had been lying to him about this whole fun dentist thing.

Someone in my neighborhood had suggested that I take him to a special kid dentist where it’s like all TV’s and balloons and foul-ass bubble gum flavored toothpaste (ew). I object to that shit unless a kid REALLY needs it for whatever reason. I just went to a regular fucking dentist my whole life and it was fine. As a kid I was susceptible to praise when it came to opening my mouth wide and I was also into choosing a shitty plastic ring or some stickers as a prize.

Jack was a little shy at first but was intrigued by the chair and the machines. The assistant was super nice and cute and talked to him just right. Not all up in his face but just telling him what she was doing, praising him and letting him hold stuff and keeping up a reasonable but not overwhelming stream of chatter.

She let him hold the suction hose thingy and called it Mr. Thirsty and Jack thought that was hilarious, he thought the tooth polisher was tickley and liked it when she squirted water in his mouth. He has 20 teeth, no cavities and now LOVES the dentist and asked if he could go again today…

He got some stickers, a very cool toothbrush that lights up and a very loud whistle with a spinny thing. Tim and went out for cocktails in the afternoon to celebrate. I was so proud of Jack!

Ever since that time at the park that Jack started trying to play with some older kids and they were racing and he couldn’t keep up he has been obsessed with having longer legs. I tell him about how when he was little he couldn’t walk and how his legs are getting longer all the time. The other day when we were discussing this he asked me when Tim and I would be babies and he would be grown up… that seemed like sort of an ominous question and I have been nicer to him ever since.

Wow! I’ve had a pretty nice day today! Last week and earlier this week was very very busy and stressful! Today I woke up early and watched the sun fill up our nice room while I read Tarzan on my phone. Then, Jack came in and scared the crap out of me. We ate breakfast and I took Jack to circus class, grocery shopping and came home, had lunch and did some leisurely cooking and cleaning. AND, most importantly, I am looking forward to the rest of my week. Childcare tomorrow and family coming for dinner, playdate on friday. One for Jack and one for me! this weekend I hope to build (have Vim build I mean) a raised bed for all my winter veggies.

Yesterday was utterly foul. I don’t even want to blog it except that I like to remember hideous moments so that other hideous moments feel slightly less so. Sunday I went and took a free capoeria class (fun but ouchy) so I was insanely sore. Monday night I stayed up til 2 studying for my Tues. test because I had been too busy, too tired or too lazy the previous week to do so. Tuesday morning I pack up ungodly amounts of shit in order to get me and jack out the door. Once at his school I realize I am getting hives in a bad way. So I am panicking and trying to drop jack off but he starts crying and wont let me go. The teacher was so super unhelpful and actually caused him to cry in the first place. I’m so freaked out and pissed that i say fuck it and drag jack off back to the car. Jack is screaming the whole way and I start crying too. I drink large quantities of benedryl when we get back tot he car.

Can i pause here to say that my practice of having liquid benedryl on me at all times has saved me much grief. It’s important to catch hives quickly before your body totally freaks out and goes into shock.

So we’re all crying and i decide to take jack to my school so that I can at least turn in the at home portion of my test. In the car I yell really loudly at jack. this works to shut him up but give him ammunition for a grievance against me that I can’t duck out of. my face is red and puffy with hives as I arrive at school. I turn in my test and everyone is very nice about how cute Jack is, etc. I go show jack all the green houses and cry some more in a very pathetic and embarrassed way. I feel very sorry for myself at this moment.

we leave and in the car I ask him if he wants to go to school now. He says yes so i go drop him off, my hives start to go down, go back to school, ace my test, come home, unpack and rest some and go get jack. PHEW. It all ended well.

If jack was a little older I would have just kept him in class with me. It’s possible that I could have done it. i had my computer and there is wireless so I could have sat him down with youtube and peppa pig. maybe, although class is from 10am to 4pm. so that’s actually too long…

I just find it very frustrating to have all this wrangling to do. I just want to effing go to class! Jack’s school is actually a ton of work for me. Or, it feels like it is anyway. It might just be that things have been very very busy since packing and moving and unpacking and starting classes. things will settle down at some point, right? Like right now. this is nice.

This week is my week to cook for Jack’s new school, which I will blog about a bit later. I have to cook a meal, and transport it, for 9 toddlers and 4 adults.

This is stressing me out on a few levels. First of all, we just moved like 2 days ago and I have no idea where most of our Tupperware is and also, suddenly having to figure out portions for so many people is hard. Oh, and what to cook is the other problem!

Menu for Tuesday Urban Forest Pre-School
SNACK
- grapes and watermelon and dried cranberries
LUNCH
– 6 chicken breasts, grilled and marinated in yogurt, ginger, garlic, olive oil. rubbed with salt and coriander. (is this going to be too spicy?!) We shall see!
– Sweet potato fries – using the convection mode on my new oven.
– sliced veggies – red, green, orange peppers and carrots
– maybe a plain yogurt dip for veggies?
– homemade pumpernickle bread and butter.

Menu for Thursday
SNACK
– apples

LUNCH
– peanut butter sandwiches cut into hearts.
– jelly on the side in case anyone wants it
– hard boiled eggs
– cheese sticks
– carrot sticks
– maybe left overs from Tuesday if they liked the food and if there is any left over?

Some possible future recipes:
black bean empanadas

Does anyone have any suggestions?!

FAIL Update:
important note! when using a convection oven you need to like halve your coking time. My sweet potato fries burned! phooey!

and LO. I just went in there a second ago and found my book Ella by Bill Peet that was mine when I was little all over the floor with one inch holes punched in all the pages. WTF?

When did he learn to use a paper punch? And why is it that anything my mom has managed to keep nice for 36 years me and my household can destroy in 36 minutes?

Recently Jack learned the words Kill, Dead, and Kill you Dead. It’s kind of horrifying to hear your 3 year old say those things. And I’ve been thinking about the day he starts doing that at our playgroup. That day was today.

He picked up a stick that was gun shaped and started to say PEW PEW PEW GUN PEW GUN PEW! and ran around pointing it at people.

I’m so conflicted. i know many parents, probably including our playgroup ones, want to avoid that sort of play in their young toddlers. And i feel bad that my kid is going to be the one that introduces it to them. Fortunately everyone in the playgroup is my friend and I hope we all get a chance to talk about it soon.

I’m not going to ban that sort of play. Jack enjoys rough and tumble play, action and play conflict. what can I do about that? Nothing, and I don’t want to as i think that is all fine play. I don’t think that playing toy guns makes kids violent. Well, pointing a toy at someone and says ‘I kill you dead’ is unquestionably violent. But it doesn’t mean my kid will grow up to participate in REAL violence against people.

I don’t actually want to hear my kid say that kind of thing. But i don’t want to ban a toy gun. Not that he actually HAS a toy gun. But he does make a toy gun out of just about everything. So I need to find an appropriate way for him to play this sort of game that isn’t horrible to hear and won’t scare the kids who don’t like that sort of game.

Here are something I do now:

I say, “We’re not playing that game right now” or “I don’t think so and so wants to play that game right now”

and recently I’ve told him that it’s not nice to say I kill you or you’re dead. People don’t like it because it’s not nice.

this morning I asked him not to kill me. and i said that when someone is dead they don’t ever come back and thats sad. All he said was ‘I WOULD FIND YOU!”

I would really like to hear what other people have to say about this. I need suggestions on how to redirect him without shaming him and without making it more attractive because it is banned.

I hate parenting magazines. Every single woman depicted in a parenting magazine is over 5’8″ and weighs about 120 lbs. As all 5’1″ of me was sitting in my paper gown in the coochie doctors office the other day I accidentally picked up a parenting magazine and ever since have been in a shame spiral. I swear to god the first thing I looked at was an article about potty training in which they told me that if you kid isn’t potty trained by 3 you are fucked and you kid will wet his pants until he is 6. That’s so awesome! The next article told me that I was short and fat. Thanks!

So now I’m more stressed about potty training. Although apparently not stressed enough to actually ever make my kid sit on the potty. I have no idea what my problem is. He did apparently poop on the potty at daycare the other day. um, yay?

Then, I bought my kid a spiderman book (age range labeled as 4-6). He picked it out at Borders. Now I highly regret it. Not only is it boring and violent but every picture includes a HUGE CROTCH BULGE. Why?

I have failed at being a hippy parent. This was entirely clear at my hippy parent meeting this week. My kid watches media, plays good guys bad guys and his play is filled with conflict and violence. But, I ask you? How many times can the squirrel and the badger go out for fucking ice cream? Doesn’t there have to be the occasional helicopter crash and crocigator attack?

Did you know that Waldorf schools don’t have books? It stifles the imagination.
