I like a pre review. All my hopes and dreams are now pinned on this new fridge that is being delivered today. Before we moved in to this house i had convinced myself that keeping a giant house clean would be easier than our smaller open floor plan loft apartment. *queue fake laugh and then serious face* No. basically all jack is gong to remember of his childhood is me attempting to clean the house and failing utterly every single week.

The new fridge is a Kitchen Aid counter depth, freezer on the bottom, french door, w/ in freezer ice-maker and in-fridge water dispenser.

I hate fridge with a door ice and water dispenser in the same way I hate a house that has it’s garage positioned closer to the street than the house. it’s like a prolapsed turtle uterus. Gross. It’s just very indecent.

I imagine that with a counter depth fridge I will no longer lose shit in the back only to find it later in a soggy moldy gross heap. That will no longer happen. Instead everything will be above my eye level and therefore will not really exist. Hopefully that means the moldy soggy thing will not exist either.

Counter depth will also mean that the kitchen will look bigger. It’s already perfectly large to medium sized kitchen so… I’m not really concerned with it seeming bigger anyway. BUT. Having the double doors will be awesome when we someday build a kitchen island. we really need some more horizontal surfaces to store our shit on.

We have sold our current fridge to some friends and I just finished cleaning it out. EW. Thank god I cleaned it our recently. that first clean out took me like ALL DAY. it was super gross. so anyway, this time around ti wasn’t so bad but still really boring. I am looking forward to arranging stuff in the new fridge. That will be the last blush of the illusionary thinking that this new fridge will make our life better.

UPDATE:
New fridge has arrived. It is quite magnificent!
behold!

It’s all clean and organized!!!
Mom, you can see there is some orange pineapple juice in there. Jack insisted that we get some for you at the store the other day…. I’m sure it will be gone by the time you get here though.

Measuring challenged

I’ve been sewing again! yay! I made two very cute bathing suit tops. One with some left over cherry fabric and some with this totally horrendous 80′s swimsuit fabric. ugh! it’s black eight turquoise and light pink brush strokes. *shudder*

I finished up the Barcelona Amy Butler skirt pattern yesterday. It came out very cute although this fabric pattern made making the ‘layered’ pattern sort of pointless. still, cute!

I’m not sure why I can’t seem to measure correctly for sewing garments. I measured my waist at like 34.25 or something and so I chose the large size for the pattern that had the finished garment measurement at 34″. Right?! That sounds like it wouldn’t end up being like 4 inches too big, right?! Well, it was.

I’m totally aware of proper measurement techniques, i know how to read measurement charts at the back of pattern catalogs, etc. Yet STILL, I can not for the life of me sew something that fits correctly.

The skirt I make came out fine anyway. I just shaved off 4 inches

I bought some plants at one place.

Yarrow, coyote mint and some chia sage (Salvia columbariae)

Vim and I have pretty much just thrown a bunch of stuff willy nilly in to the backyard. I have no idea really how go about planning and then executing a garden plan. This does not stress me out…

We have chicken eggs! Buffy and Red have been laying, mostly one egg a day. The eggs are about medium sized and do look lovely and more golden yellow with the white all firm and standy upy than store bought eggs.

They have chosen NOT to lay their eggs in their current nest box. Instead they sneak away to a corner of the yard and hide beneath an old propane tank. Everyday in the late morning you can go look under there and usually find 2 eggs.

Buffy likes to announce her egg and Reds egg by doing the usual bokbokbokbokBOCK noise. Red is more discreet.

I’m dying to know what color Vespas eggs will be!

So far I have only had one teeny taste since I am on a 21 day detox diet with my acupuncturist. I’ll post about that later!

Did you know that you get a bottomless basket of popovers when you have breakfast at the Cliff House? Totally true. We went over there last weekend and it must have been a spring tide because it was low enough to walk from Ocean Beach to the Sutro Baths. I love that! I’m always thrilled when the tide is low enough to do it.

As we were sitting having brunch we could see a huge number of people gathering down the beach and after a while they started walking down the beach towards us. Finally, as they got closer, we could see that they all had teeny tiny dogs running around them. Teeny tiny dog meet up!

Vim is always coming up with silly dogs to mix with a weiner dog, either based on coming up with a funny name or imagining an absurd looking combo.

Well, we signed some loan papers. I’m so nervous. What if this loan doesn’t go through and we try to get another loan but it takes too long and we miss the deadline? We’re dealing with a bank and I think that we have no wiggle room in the timing dept.

The street is not exactly tree lined but it’s an awesome location with everything just a few blocks away. The neighborhood is pleasant and fun with lots of outdoor cafes, 2 fabric and one sewing store, the library and post office both half a block away.

I want it to be my neighborhood so much and so I am so nervous. We’ve been waiting for 8 months for this house.

subject: really good article about scurvy

_______________________________
Yes. Yes, indeed! Thank you very much!

The symptoms of scurvy do not necessarily occur in a regular order, but generally the first sign is an inflamed, swollen condition of the gums. The whitish pink tinge next the teeth is replaced by an angry red; as the disease gains ground the gums become more spongy and turn to a purplish colour, the teeth become loose and the gums sore. Spots appear on the legs, and pain is felt in old wounds and bruises; later, from a slight oedema, the legs, and then the arms, swell to a great size and become blackened behind the joints. After this the patient is soon incapacitated, and the last horrible stages of the disease set in, from which death is a merciful release.

I very much enjoyed this article. And now I want to read the book Limeys.
It’s funny how it never occurred to me as odd that so many later travel stories had parts about expeditions were everyone got scurvy when it should have been clear how to NOT get scurvy. This article goes into such great detail. I’m so glad someone wrote it.

My main thoughts on it were:
1. Infant scurvy! ugh! how awful! and, onion juice! ew!

2. It’s a good thing the 1894 the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition had enough officers sharing the polar bear liver else they might all have just died from vit. A poisoning.
