I’m excited about the Eat Real Festival this weekend happening at Jack London Square. I’ll be hanging around from 10am to 1pm doing something unspecified with the Oakland Museum of California and then I plan on hanging out and seeing stuff. Like the chicken 101 class and the goat milking demo. See whole weekend schedule here.

I’m also super excited about our new house. Vim just stopped amidst our disgustingly messy kitchen and said, “i’ve got apartment senoritis”. Not that our place has ever been kept clean… but now I feel no incentive to clean AT ALL. My new theory is that I will just move the clean stuff that I can see and then I’ll just fucking torch the rest of it. My other new theory of packing and moving is that I will only pack the things I can see nd that I know already have a place to live at the new house. Like, I got a bug up my ass to move all of our board games. it was CRUCIAL that we get Big Boggle and Ice Towers over to the new place like yesterday. Now they are unpacked into the hall closet all waiting… for something.

I’ve bought 365000 million dollars worth of Ikea curtains. I also bought some chicken coop plans today The Garden Ark on the recommendation of @craftleftovers. Vim has a line on some RI Red chicks from a dude who has a guerilla chicken farm in west oakland. Then, I want to get either an orpington, an easter egger or a silver cuckoo marans. I confess, I want a colorful egg basket.

My sister traveled to England recently and lamented the fact that she couldn’t find any suitably hilarious punk commemorative tea towels. So, obviously, I had to quickly dash off a few Sex Pistols inspired tea towel designs to Spoonflower for printing.

First, the classic calendar style tea towel with sid vicious and some paint splatters:

And then another with God Save the Queen and a huge safety pin:

How to get a tea towel printed at SpoonFlower.

You can download an html (editable in Word) or a photoshop file of the calendar template over on spoonflower here.

I don’t know anything about Word so I have no clue why you would want to download something that is editable in Word. whatever.

- Create a new photoshop file that is about 27″ by 18″
- Copy and paste in calendar parts if you want.
- Grab some images and drop them in and arrange them. In this case I wouldn’t be to het up about your images resolution. Even a crappy downloaded from google images gif ends up looking mostly okay. Don’t sweat it but the higher the res the better.
- Once you have your image ready you can go to SpoonFlower.com and create a profile.
- Then go to http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/new and upload your photoshop file.
- Now it is time to order your tea towel. There are various fabrics you can choose from. I’ve made all mine with the linen-cotton canvas and printed it centered on a fat quarter. It’s the perfect size and easy as pie to hem. The linen-cottom canvas ends up being 14$ but I think the quilting weight cotton would end up working fine as well and those are 11$.

You can also order these tea towels straight from SpoonFlower here: God Save the Queen and the Sex Pistols calendar (comes complete with typos!).

Lat night Vim and I made English muffins with the Alton Brown recipe. DAMN! They are good. This recipe calls for cooking them on a griddle, which we don’t have. I just used a large pan and ended up sort of scorching the outsides of several of them. I would like to try an oven baked recipe next so that I can get that cornmeal on the bottom feel to them. I’m thinking on the pizza stone would work quite well.

Look at this lusciousness!

Coming soon: Some geek tea towels and more punk ones including Joan Jett!

Grace Dobush – Crafty Superstar – Cincinnati – crafty supermarket craft fair

Jamie Chan – Urban Fauna Studio – Bazaar Bizarre SF

How to NOT freak out while juggling crafting, full or part time non-crafting related job, family, etc. For people who are not really interested in taking their craft business full time. Balance, personal life, work life, crafty life with out going crazy.
3 main challenges, burn out- creative blocks, keeping on track and organized.

It’s okay to take a break, know your limits. the world wont crumble etc if you step back and take some time to recharge.

Artits way – idea of artist dates – a great way to take time for yourself.

If your taking a longer break leave a thoughtful note letting your readers and customers know that you ARE coming back, why you’re taking a break so people don’t think you have totally disappeared. Etsy lets you turn off your store.

Learn to say NO. it’s hard to pass up opportunities.if you do have to say no, you can suggest someone else who might be a good replacement.

Personal health, yoga! be healthy and take care of yourself.

Media/craft diet. take some time to do NO craft related books and activities.

Reiterate the artist way – great to do three min stream of consciousness can really help you clear out the clutter in your brain. talk to friends to help you get out of your own head, you can end up being your own worst enemy.

What part of the process do you enjoy – making, process, selling, etc.

Defining success for yourself – your version of success might be doing few shows per year, or selling 100 items on etsy in 3 months, or starting to sell wholesale, etc. don’t let other people define your success.

Who is happy with their part time craft work

Lots of way to combine crafting and other work. part-time work (can be dfound with benefits)

Government jobs are good thing to look into.

Getting your own health insurance isn’t that scary and hard. just do it!

Do people tell work supervisors about having another job crafting? interesting question!

How do you block out your time so that you can get stuff done?

you have to be good at discipline, having ritual, time-management is SO IMPORTANT.

Creative habit – twyla tharp BOOK

Giant visual schedules can really help, huge post-its! dry erase

Also, baby steps. don’t overwhelm yourself by always thinking fo the big picture. break tasks into small do-able chunks.

Jill Debanski –
9 creative muses life coach creative coach – BOOK
the muse is in.
blog also, free podcasts.

how to deal with creative blocks:
dictionary writing activity,
museums, art gallery,
15 minute walk, bookstore – look through magazines,
a strong cocktail, hang out with inspiring crafty friends.

*** I’ll spruce this up with links later

It can make it easier to have a business partner, less isolating

Money – what to do with it?
Do i invest this in more product? or save it up for leaner times? pay ourselves?
when to know when to either.

Faythe – what do you want to do. how will this fit into your lifestyle and personality. Do you want to have a business that sustains your forever? or do you see your self doing it for a few years. something to think about.

I’m off to Seattle tomorrow at 7am (gah!). I absolutely HAVE to pack light for this trip since my suitcase has to be stuffed with 50 pounds of conference programs. Even though there are a few glaring problems with it it still came out fairly cute.

What conference you ask? The Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs (<-- I NEVER spell that right) that I have been working on with Jamie Chan - http://www.urbanfaunastudio.com/, Lauren Venell – http://sweet-meats.com/, Kristen Rask – http://www.shmancytoys.com and Andrea Porter – http://www.matthewporterart.com/ for like, the last year.

So, I’m excited. I’ve never been to Seattle although I’m sure I will end up only seeing the conference rooms. That’s fine. It will be great to meet all the conference goers and spend time with the speakers, attend some sessions and spaz about various organization details. It has been weird to organize something happening in another state with people who live in that state. I’m not sure what the difference would be if we had organized it here. I’m hoping we do it again next year and have it here in the Bay Area.

Having just been to BlogHer I’m still basking in the warm glow that is meeting people in person and having fun and talking about things that interest us with strangers who quickly become something more. It’s a dynamic that I’m actually not really that good at and that makes me TIRED. But tired in a good way and i’m not good at it because I’m an introvert so what r u going to do?

Anyway, I value it and enjoy it and am so happy to have opportunities to do it with a bunch of bloggers and with a bunch of kick ass crafty business women.

Back to packing… really truly packing light is very difficult. I mean, my hotel has a pool and a fitness center and so clearly I need to bring workout clothes and a swimsuit. amiright? I can eliminate bringing ear plugs since I am rooming alone. so there’s that… It’s only three days so I can get away with one pair of pants, one skirt and one dress and one pair of shoes (two pairs since I’ll need workout shoes). + 50 pounds of conference guides. I can do it!

Liz wrote up yesterday pretty well here so I won’t rehash it. Except maybe to say that when we at the entrance to Central Park it was so very alluring. I need to go in there. I am looking forward to doing one of those horse and buggy rides with some drunk BlogHers. s that so very wrong?

Woke up sort of late today and didn’t get out of here until like noon. I hung around the lobby for a bit to see if I noticed anyone I knew who might want to come on a wandering adventure with me but didn’t see anyone and was eager to get out and explore. I left thinking I would head to the garment district but looked the the left and saw the Empire State building and just headed towards that. It was so fun to just wander around. I got to Grand Central Station and went in and sat there for a while. I don’t know1 Think of all the kids books you’ve read where they are in Grand Central Station?! I felt really happy and connected.

It was fucking HOT. I was sweating like … someone who sweats a lot. I dabbed myself with a dainty handkerchief. After G.C.S. i called home to talk to my kid. He was happy to hear from me and super cute on the phone. At three yrs. old he is just learning to talk on the phone. I miss my bunn! Both of them!

I meant t head to the Empire State Building but got distracted by the NY Public Library. WOW. I’m so in love and so intimidated.

Then I went and lurked for a bit in Bryant Park. Ate some kinda boring food and listened to Broadway in the Park. Went to Japanese bookstore that is right there and lusted for all the craft books. I may have to go back and Barbapapa book in Japanese.

Then I accidentally went to Times Square. Really I should have just gone south from Bryant Park towards the garment district but got a bit confused. I went to the Sanrio store and was tempted by the Hella Kitty stuff and the I Love Nerds stuff.

Ended up on Mood Fabrics and it was so awesome I almost passed out. All at once i realized i was dead tired and my feet were about to fall off. I may have to go back and roll around in the beautiful shirting fabric.

Went to some BlogHer parties… People’s Party and Queerosphere. Fun! What ho! Feeling festive!

Recently Jack learned the words Kill, Dead, and Kill you Dead. It’s kind of horrifying to hear your 3 year old say those things. And I’ve been thinking about the day he starts doing that at our playgroup. That day was today.

He picked up a stick that was gun shaped and started to say PEW PEW PEW GUN PEW GUN PEW! and ran around pointing it at people.

I’m so conflicted. i know many parents, probably including our playgroup ones, want to avoid that sort of play in their young toddlers. And i feel bad that my kid is going to be the one that introduces it to them. Fortunately everyone in the playgroup is my friend and I hope we all get a chance to talk about it soon.

I’m not going to ban that sort of play. Jack enjoys rough and tumble play, action and play conflict. what can I do about that? Nothing, and I don’t want to as i think that is all fine play. I don’t think that playing toy guns makes kids violent. Well, pointing a toy at someone and says ‘I kill you dead’ is unquestionably violent. But it doesn’t mean my kid will grow up to participate in REAL violence against people.

I don’t actually want to hear my kid say that kind of thing. But i don’t want to ban a toy gun. Not that he actually HAS a toy gun. But he does make a toy gun out of just about everything. So I need to find an appropriate way for him to play this sort of game that isn’t horrible to hear and won’t scare the kids who don’t like that sort of game.

Here are something I do now:

I say, “We’re not playing that game right now” or “I don’t think so and so wants to play that game right now”

and recently I’ve told him that it’s not nice to say I kill you or you’re dead. People don’t like it because it’s not nice.

this morning I asked him not to kill me. and i said that when someone is dead they don’t ever come back and thats sad. All he said was ‘I WOULD FIND YOU!”

I would really like to hear what other people have to say about this. I need suggestions on how to redirect him without shaming him and without making it more attractive because it is banned.

I’m still crying about what happened in jack’s class today. I feel like a TOTAL ASS for not stepping in in some way or other. but like, what? Do i halt the class and pull the teacher aside and say… what? Quit acting like these kids are 8 yr olds. BE MORE CLEAR. FUCK OFF.

Instead I quietly fumed and tweeted and now I feel horrible horrible horrible.
I have written my letter and it’s like 40 paragraphs long. OMG I am so gladI am not a business owner.

Hi,

I just wanted to write an email to discuss my child’s unpleasant class today. The staff (and patrons for that matter) of your school have always been very warm, responsive and considerate and I really appreciate that. We’ve been coming for the pre-circus class for around 6 months and have really enjoyed it. My observations of Jack in the class seem to be overall positive. I believe that he has participated, listened and learned at an age appropriate rate so far.

As a parent of a young child it’s my responsibility to make sure he ends up in situations that he can succeed in and that meet his needs. From the very beginning of todays class I was feeling twinges of concern and I almost packed him up to bring him home in the middle of class but I decided against it because I figured that that would end up disrupting and confusing him even more. Looking back, I really regret not removing him from the class once it was clear to me that the teacher was unable to direct to 3 yr olds appropriately.

My observation is that the teacher, _______, while a lovely young woman and I’m sure a skilled teacher in many ways, is probably not very experienced teaching very young children.
Her directions were not clear and simple and her transitions between activities were also not clear and simple.

For instance, after a not very warm warm up, she had the two children begin to help her set up an obstacle course. In the middle of doing that she paused at a station not at the beginning of the course and tried to get the kids to do just one portion of the course. I could see right away that that was confusing for my kid as he went to the beginning of the course to start. She got annoyed with him for not understanding that she wanted him to try this one station in the middle of the not even completed obstacle course. Clearly, the teacher needed to set up the course either with their help or without it and then demonstrate the entire course. It might work to skip around with older kids but not with 3 yr olds.

The teacher continued to give unclear instructions all class and she HARPED on my kid for not getting it all class. I swear, I have never taken Jack to a class anywhere where I had to hear the teacher reprimand him almost constantly. That to me tells me the teacher is doing something wrong, not the kid. Anyway, I’m 36 years old and I could barely tell what she wanted the kids to be doing. So I really can’t blame my kid for getting more and more upset through out the class and finally ending up having a melt down.

Also, at one point I heard the teacher say something along the lines of ‘you wont be able to come to class if you don’t listen’. I really really regret not stepping in right then as that is totally unacceptable. If a three year old is having trouble in a class you do not threaten to ban them, beside, if I have paid for the classes my child should be allowed to continue in them unless there is a serious ongoing behavioral problem that isn’t the result of poor teaching practices. Three year olds are developmentally immature, they are still learning how to share, cooperate and listen to instructions. Threatening them is never never an option. If a child needs to be reprimanded there should A. be clear rules B. clear consequences.

I understand that the teacher might be in the process of learning how to conduct a class and to adapt to different age levels. If you feel it is appropriate to mention any of my observations from today I do hope they will be taken constructively and not as personal criticism.

I also understand that as a business you may have to juggle staff around to meet all the needs of your patrons. That said, I can’t keep my kid in a class where I know he is going to struggle. He’s only three and there’s time enough when he’s in the school system for him to have no choice in teachers.

I can see from your schedule that _______ is now the teacher for the monday morning class. The other times for the pre-circus classes don’t work for us. On sat 9 is too early and the other days, from 4-5 is to close to nap and dinner time and Tuesdays and Wednesdays Jack is with a secondary caregiver.

I’m sad to say we will have to ask for a refund for the remaining classes in Jack’s session. I would like to make sure we are refunded the money from todays class as well as the remaining classes.

Thanks for your time reading this email and I hope to bring Jack back at a later date when there is a more appropriate teacher and class time for him.

-Me

____

fuck it. I will get my money back and take Jack to the other circus school that has trampolines.

Sheesh. I Jack and I just had a very crappy experience. i’m so mad at myself and at the teacher.

We went to circus class and it wasn’t the regular teacher. Normally class is set up well for three yr olds. transitions are pretty clearly delineated and it’s always clear what they are supposed to be doing. they run around, do a warm up and then do the obstacle course that is already set up and then maybe they change it a bit ro do one other activity or game and then they cool down. there is always a water break in the middle of class.

so this teachers directions were super WORDY. First they were sort of setting up an obstacle course with her. sort of. even i wasnt sure what they were doing. she was having them help set up but then stop in the middle of that to learn one part of the course, which out having done the first part and she was calling a beach ball a baseball. Jack was trying to start the course at the beginning. whatever. so all class the teacher was fucking harping on him for not doing shit right but it wasn’t clear what they were supposed to be doing. at one point i heard her say that jack wasnt going to get to come to class if he didnt do what she said. but she kept changing what they were doing. it wasnt clear! and besides, my kid DOES get to go to fucking class because i PAID for it.

the whole class my stomach was getting tighter and tighter. i even tweeted about it. and i was thinking i needed to just take him and leave since the teacher was fucking clueless. I wish i had just left. but i didn’t because that would have been confusing for jack too. leaving in the middle of class… so we stayed. finally at the end jack wasn’t doing the activity exactly right, he wasn’t listening and he started crying. The regular teacher, who was there but teaching the bigger kid class, had to step in and picked him up and then jack had a massive tantrum.

I picked him up and just left. When a three yr old is that upset you can’t piss around talking to them more or explaining or whatever. I think they need to be removed from the situation, then calmed down and then talked to.

I’m mad and sad that i didnt just leave.
i’m mad the teacher sucked so hard.
I’m mad that the regular non sucky teacher wasnt teaching the class.
I’m mad that i had to leave with a screaming upset kid.
I’m sad for jack that the class was confusing and that that was making it hard for him to cooperate and work with the teacher.

a three year old needs clear SIMPLE instructions and clear simple transitions from activities.

I’m mad because i don’t know what to do. I want to call the place and i want to complain to them about what happened. I don’t want them to think i’m a parent who thinks their kid is always ‘right’ or whatever or that like i would get mad at a teacher because my kid misbehaves.

I don’t think jack was misbehaving. i think he was confused by the teacher. i think three year olds aren’t mature enough to deal weird confusing instructions.

Maybe that teacher is great for some three yr olds.there was one other little girl in the class who was not getting harped at by the teacher. so maybe she’s a great teacher. just not right for jack.

but I’m still not sure what to do. Kids do need to learn how to deal with new people and situations, it’s true. so, I don’t know. I still can’t blame him for what happened.

Should i write an email to the circus school? I mean, they don’t care about my opinions about how a class for three y olds should be set up. I’m not a gymnast or a teacher. but still…

ugh. *weep*

We attempted a plum jam last week. Plums were picked at a friends house and we bought some strawberries to add. We also added allspice and cinnamon. I was a bit scattered while we were making it and added the pectin at the wrong time. So the jam didn’t really gel like it should have. It turned out super tasty though and we had some on our pancakes over the weekend. I can’t find the recipe we used now but they all seemed about the same anyway. We used way less sugar than the recipe listed though. I wonder if that might also be a reason it didn’t gel. Maybe I should read up on how pectin works…

Vim made some cupcakes for me for my birthday using my favorite godiva cake recipe and with cream cheese frosting. he made some cinnamon cream cheese frosting and some strawberry cream cheese frosting. It’s weird how the strawberry one tastes sort of fake even though it was made with actual strawberries. Still, I continue to love a cream cheese frosting more than a butter cream one.

While making broth last night out of one of those pre cooked chickens i thought maybe it was time that i learn to make my own yummy chicken salad. I’m eating it right now and it’s not great. I need to work on it. Clearly I need to drive about 40 miles to get my favorite chicken salad sandwich and pay more attention to whats in there. The one I just made is chicken, mayo, red grapes, cashews, celery, pepper, salt, poppy seeds and some garlic salt. it’s not perfect.

I hate parenting magazines. Every single woman depicted in a parenting magazine is over 5’8″ and weighs about 120 lbs. As all 5’1″ of me was sitting in my paper gown in the coochie doctors office the other day I accidentally picked up a parenting magazine and ever since have been in a shame spiral. I swear to god the first thing I looked at was an article about potty training in which they told me that if you kid isn’t potty trained by 3 you are fucked and you kid will wet his pants until he is 6. That’s so awesome! The next article told me that I was short and fat. Thanks!

So now I’m more stressed about potty training. Although apparently not stressed enough to actually ever make my kid sit on the potty. I have no idea what my problem is. He did apparently poop on the potty at daycare the other day. um, yay?

Then, I bought my kid a spiderman book (age range labeled as 4-6). He picked it out at Borders. Now I highly regret it. Not only is it boring and violent but every picture includes a HUGE CROTCH BULGE. Why?

I have failed at being a hippy parent. This was entirely clear at my hippy parent meeting this week. My kid watches media, plays good guys bad guys and his play is filled with conflict and violence. But, I ask you? How many times can the squirrel and the badger go out for fucking ice cream? Doesn’t there have to be the occasional helicopter crash and crocigator attack?

Did you know that Waldorf schools don’t have books? It stifles the imagination.

Did you know that you get a bottomless basket of popovers when you have breakfast at the Cliff House? Totally true. We went over there last weekend and it must have been a spring tide because it was low enough to walk from Ocean Beach to the Sutro Baths. I love that! I’m always thrilled when the tide is low enough to do it.

As we were sitting having brunch we could see a huge number of people gathering down the beach and after a while they started walking down the beach towards us. Finally, as they got closer, we could see that they all had teeny tiny dogs running around them. Teeny tiny dog meet up!

Vim is always coming up with silly dogs to mix with a weiner dog, either based on coming up with a funny name or imagining an absurd looking combo.

the thing is, I get obsessed with like one or two kids of food and I LUST for whatever it is. Some are transient and some stick around for years and years. This particular sandwich has been on my list for like 10 years. As has C.T.M from a couple of different Indian restaurants. Sometimes, I’ll go get whatever my obsession is and then I just have to keep having it. For weeks. If I dont have it, it’s all I think about.
