I taught Sunday School at Church of Craft this past Sunday here in Oakland at the Rock! Paper! Scissors! Collective. My class was How to make a Freezer Paper Stencil and it was pretty fun and people made some cute stencils. Witness:

I made two: a star trek Federation symbol on a black tank top for Jack and a stencil of a forklift that says DAVE under it, also for Jack. I’m so jealous of the Federation symbol I am going to make myself one and one for Badger too.

I just read in a silkscreen book that you can use freezer paper as an indirect stencil with a screen. Which is great as it makes your freezer paper stencil capable of being reused. The book didn’t say how to do it exactly. I think I would use spray adhesive on the freezer paper to stick it to the screen.

I am so fired for procrastinating right now. I spent all night not doing what I should have been doing. No worries, I will pay pay pay for in the next few days.

I’ve decided that I am too wishywashy to accept custom orders. Right now that is. I think in order to do so you have to lay out parameters and stick with them and you have to have a selection, on hand, of choices for the customer. It can’t just be all nebulous like the one I am working on right now. I said something like, “oh, I’ll put some black lace on it”. But really, I don’t have black lace on hand that is appropriate and whatever black lace is in my vision may not be what is in the customers vision AT ALL. There’s no way to know. Now, if I had had two kinds of black lace and had them photographed and sent them to the client for her to choose then that would have worked out fine. ALAS.

So yeah, it’s a learning process for me.

Craft fairs, what think ye? Is it just me or were there like 45,000 craft fairs this season? I didn’t make it to all of them and missed the stupid crucible one! wtf?! I had it on my calender and the day of I was all, “we’re going to the crucible fair!” and then we didn’t. I don’t know what that’s about.

I did well and had fun at the BB. It is an established fair that gets a good turn out. I also did a tiny craft fair at a bar on Sunday night last. The Okalnd DIY one. It was fun and I could tell that the organizer worked hard to do all the organizing. However, it was at a dumb time and while I loved the venue as a bar it might not attract the right crafty buying sort of crowd. With more and better advertising it could work though. For the most part I was thinking, “WHY am I freezing my ass off in the rain on a Sunday night with the scungiest 20 yr old boy (not quite) hipsters on the planet in this dive bar?!” aHhahahah

Anywho. I’m not sure how people end up making a living doing this or if they actually ever do. Especially with out getting burned out. I’m kind of finally sick of making spats!

The white elephant pre-sale was a few weeks ago and was totally overwhelming. It always is. One needs to brings a personal sherpa in order to fully extract the maximum amount of goodness.
Next year, or maybe this march, I have a new strategy. Get there EARLY. Park close. Return to car with first load of crap and then return.

WAIT A SECOND.

Wasn’t I just posting about not needing any more stuff?

How could I resist all these frames tho? Round and Oval frames tend to be pricey and these were all cheap and totally cute.

For the two matching round ones I’m thinking of doing portraits of our cats. With olives on their heads.

I also bought some foam floor puzzle pieces for Jack to flobber around on. And a ton of cute clothes for an older Jack.

And some very cute vintage rhinestone buttons and some excellent fabric. Oh, and a ton of zippers in various sizes.

The possibilities are endless at the white elephant sale tho. There was a bright blue velvety arm chair that i lusted after for my art room and all kinds of other goodness. We didn’t even make it into most of the areas. I by passed books and clothes completely. Next year we go with no little ones so that we can let our greed run wild and free .. unfettered, if you will.
